Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing the causes of long working hours and clearly stating a position that the disadvantages heavily outweigh the advantages. The ideas presented are relevant to the topic of work-life balance and personal health. However, some aspects are more fully developed than others, which prevents the score from reaching a higher level. While the consequences and pressures are explained with general reasoning and an example from India, certain supporting points tend to generalise or repeat concepts regarding stress and career goals without fully extending the argument. To move into the higher band, the discussion would need more fully sustained, deep exploration of ideas throughout the body paragraphs, avoiding slight tendencies toward over-generalisation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to divide the essay into logical sections, introducing the causes in the second paragraph and the negative impacts in the third. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas together, such as transition phrases like 'For example', 'For Instance', and 'In the conclusion'. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear, such as in sentences where pronoun use is slightly confusing (e.g., 'because this they has less their own personal life is suffering'). To achieve a higher level, the flow between sentences and paragraphs needs to be smoother, with more varied and flexible cohesive devices rather than repetitive transitional structures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'contemporary epoch', 'devastating lifestyle', and 'work life imbalance'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word forms that prevent a higher band, such as 'working lifestyle', 'companies are more focused of getting the their targets complete', and 'health problem' instead of 'health problems'. Additionally, spelling and word formation errors appear throughout the text, though they generally do not impede communication. To reach the next level, the writer needs to demonstrate a more precise and flexible control of vocabulary, ensuring correct collocations and accurate word forms without relying on awkward phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting complex structures to explain reasons and consequences. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, verb forms, and articles that occur consistently throughout the text. Examples of these issues include subject-verb agreement and tense errors such as 'The working hours for an individual has became longer', 'because this they has less', and 'amount of work is done'. Punctuation and preposition usage also show persistent slips. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to place the grammar score in the lower range. To improve, the writer must exercise better control over basic and complex grammatical structures, reducing errors in verb agreement and article usage.
