IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Many people work long hours, leaving very little time for leisure activities.
Does this situation have more advantages or more disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
An insignificant amount of time is available for one to engage in relaxing activities after spending hours working. In my opinion, this has more negative effect on the social life of people as they become introvert, however dedicating time to their daily task at work makes them determined.
Meeting work goals is important for people as they focus on their job effectively. Such staffs are incredibly rewarded with gifts or promotion. Similarly, outings could result in an individual having alot of alcoholic drink that causes accident or bad hangover which significantly affects their productivity at work the next day and is thereby avoided.
Reduced social interation is a typical example of not involving oneself in leisure activities. When people are not able to frequently communicate with different individuals of varying character, it affects how they are able to interact during business meetings
In my conclusion, people should be encouraged to engage in social activities as it increases their chances of securing huge business deals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You give a discernible view that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, and you include relevant points about reduced social interaction and work goals. However, the position is not consistently clear: the opening calls the effect negative, then presents dedication to work as a benefit, while the conclusion recommends social activities without directly weighing the two sides. The point about avoiding alcohol-related accidents is only loosely connected to having little leisure time, and the social-interaction idea is not explained with a specific example. The response also falls short of the required 250 words, so the argument remains limited and under-developed. State your comparison clearly and extend each main reason with explanation or an example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to work-related benefits, social effects, and a conclusion. Some linking is attempted through “Similarly” and “When,” and the reader can identify the main topics. However, there is no clear progression in the argument: the second paragraph shifts from rewards at work to alcohol and accidents, and the relationship between these points is not made explicit. The final sentence introduces business deals without connecting this claim to the preceding discussion. The conclusion also does not clearly summarise the comparison. Organise the body around one advantage and one disadvantage, use topic sentences, and make each example support the paragraph’s central point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary, including “leisure activities,” “productivity,” “social interaction,” and “business meetings,” and phrases such as “varying character” show an attempt to express more specific ideas. The range is adequate for communicating the topic, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “such staffs” is not the natural plural for employees, “alot of alcoholic drink” is awkward, and “huge business deals” is informal and imprecise in this context. There are also spelling errors in “interation” and “alot.” Aim for accurate collocations and more formal phrasing, such as “employees,” “a large amount of alcohol,” and “significant business agreements.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including the opening clause “after spending hours working” and the conditional-style explanation beginning “When people are not able to…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following your meaning. Some grammatical issues are present, however. In “this has more negative effect,” the singular count noun needs an article, and “as they become introvert” needs a plural adjective form or a different construction. The sentence beginning “When people…” is left without a full stop, and the final paragraph’s “In my conclusion” is an awkward sentence opening. Check articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, and vary sentence structures while keeping each sentence complete.
