IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have seen an advertisement from a couple, who live in Australia, for someone to teach their two children your language for a year. Write a letter to the couple. In your letter

- give your reasons for wanting the job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Ma
I recently came across an advert stating your need for a tutor conversant in Yoruba language. I majored in yoruba studies at university where i not only learnt the language properly but also got familiar with the culture, history and traditions. I aced all my exams coming out as the best graduating student with First class honors, so i am definitely most suitable for the job because not only will i teach them the language, they will also learn the history and traditions.
In addition, i could also assist in babysitting your kids during busy schedules. I can come in earlier than scheduled time for class and stay until later to assist in looking after the kids as i'm aware you are the busy type due to work.
I recently finished school and I do not plan to do my masters program immediately so this job will keep me from being home idle and also, i will be able to save towards the degree from my pay.
I look forward to your earliest response.
Yours faithfully,
Dorcas Fiyinfunoluwa.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: your Yoruba studies and academic result support your suitability, babysitting is offered as an additional contribution, and saving for a master’s degree explains your motivation. The details about learning Yoruba culture and traditions also make your teaching offer relevant to the family. However, the reasons for wanting the job focus mainly on avoiding idleness and saving money; adding a reason connected to teaching children or sharing your language would make this part more fully developed. The opening, “Dear Sir/Ma,” is not well matched to a couple, and the letter could identify the advertised position more directly. Overall, the purpose is clear and the main points are covered, but their development is uneven.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you explain your qualifications, offer extra help, give your reasons for applying, and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these points, while transitions such as “In addition” and “so” show how ideas relate. Some connections are less smooth or precise. For example, “I can come in earlier than scheduled time for class and stay until later” is understandable, but the relationship between teaching hours and babysitting could be expressed more directly. The final paragraph also moves quickly from finishing school to saving for a degree. Use clearer links between each claim and its relevance to the family, and maintain a consistent, appropriate letter format to make the progression more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “conversant,” “traditions,” “First class honors,” and “assist in babysitting.” These choices communicate your qualifications and offer clearly, and the reader can understand your meaning throughout. Some expressions are less natural or precise: “the busy type due to work” sounds conversational, while “keep me from being home idle” is awkward. “Advert” is understandable, but “advertisement” would sound more formal in this context. Capitalisation and spelling also need attention, particularly “yoruba” and “i.” To strengthen your vocabulary, choose natural collocations and formal phrasing, and check proper nouns and sentence-initial words carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both straightforward sentences and more complex structures, including the clause beginning “where I not only learnt…” and the reason introduced by “because.” Most of the message remains easy to follow, but some grammatical and punctuation errors reduce accuracy. In “I can come in earlier than scheduled time,” the article is missing before “scheduled time”; “I do not plan to do my masters program” would be clearer as “I do not plan to begin my master’s programme.” The opening “Dear Sir/Ma” is also incomplete as a form of address, and the first sentence ends without a full stop. Review articles, possessive forms, capitalisation, and sentence punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
