Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Smith,

I hope you and your family is doing well, I am Jashanjot Singh, I saw the advertisement for teacher required to teach the Punjabi at Indeed.

I was surprised to see this job posting at first, as not many people choose Punjabi to be their second language in Australia. Punjabi is my first language, and not only I was born and raised in the state of Punjab but I was also a taught many students as a tutor, therefore I believe my experience as a tutor would help me be a good fit for this part time job.

I am also a proffesional engineer, hence I can also help the kids with maths and science subjects, and I can also give a breif description of what and how is to work as a Mechanical engineer.

This job would help me with my savings goal, and it would help me relax a bit as well.

I am hoping to hear from you soon, and if you need any other information or a reffrences please let me know.

Regards,

Jashanjot Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain your suitability through being a Punjabi speaker and tutor, offer help with maths and science, and give personal reasons for wanting the role. These details are relevant, and the letter has an appropriate opening and closing. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, your tutoring experience is mentioned but not illustrated with the ages or needs of students you have taught, and “help me relax a bit” is a rather vague reason for applying. Explain more specifically what you hope to gain from the position and how you would teach the children. This would make your purpose and suitability clearer and more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is arranged in a clear overall sequence: introduction, suitability, additional help, reasons for applying, and a closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “therefore,” “hence,” and “as well” help connect ideas. This already gives the reader a coherent account. At times, however, connections feel mechanical or the sentences carry several ideas at once. The opening joins a greeting, a statement about the family, and your introduction with a comma, while the suitability paragraph uses “and” and “therefore” to link multiple claims. Use clearer sentence boundaries and vary the transitions so that each paragraph develops its main point smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main information, including relevant terms such as “Punjabi,” “tutor,” “professional engineer,” and “Mechanical engineer.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “savings goal.” However, several spelling errors and awkward word choices reduce precision and make the language less natural: “proffesional,” “breif,” and “reffrences” should be corrected, while “teacher required to teach the Punjabi” is not idiomatic. Choose conventional phrases such as “a Punjabi-language tutor” and “provide references.” Also avoid wording like “a brief description of what and how is to work”; state directly what you could explain to the children. Proofreading and more natural collocations would strengthen your vocabulary control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sentence with “not only … but also” and clauses linked by “as” and “therefore.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I hope you and your family is” has subject–verb disagreement; use “are.” The opening sentence is a comma splice, and “I was also a taught many students” has an incorrect verb construction. In “what and how is to work,” the clause structure is incomplete. Break up long sentences, check agreement and verb forms, and make sure each clause has a clear subject and verb. These revisions would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex structures.
