Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am Tinkal Patel, writing this to apply for the position of language tutor for your two children.
To begin with,I was reading a newspaper yesterday and I got to know about this advertisement from it. I have recently completed my bachelor degree from an Australian University. My major was English and second subject was French. I am living here in Australia for the past six years. Therefore, I am very much familiar with the Australian culture. Additionally, I am very fluent in French and I have cleared extra examinations of French language. Moreover, I am a good dancer as well, so apart from teaching French I can teach them dancing too.
Lastly, I have been searching for a temporary job before starting my further studies. I would like to do this job because I am facing financial difficulties. I hope you will consider this matter.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your positive response.
Yours sincerely,
Tinkal Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain your suitability through your French studies and experience in Australia, offer dancing lessons as an additional contribution, and give your reasons for applying. The letter is relevant and its purpose is clear. The suitability point is the strongest, with several supporting details, while the extra help and motivation are less developed: for example, you mention dancing but do not explain how you would teach or engage the children, and financial difficulty is the main reason given for wanting the role. To strengthen the response, add a specific example of your teaching or experience with children and explain what you hope to contribute to the family beyond the language lessons. This would make the ideas more fully supported and balanced.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening application, a paragraph about your qualifications and possible extra help, a paragraph explaining your motivation, and a polite closing. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Additionally,” and “Lastly” help readers follow the points. However, the transitions can feel mechanical, and the first paragraph combines several ideas without a clear separation between qualifications and other activities. The opening also moves abruptly from the advertisement to your degree. Use paragraphing to group related information and connect ideas more naturally—for instance, introduce your teaching suitability, then explain your cultural familiarity, before presenting dancing as a separate offer. This would make the progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on signposting phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the purpose and key details, including “language tutor,” “major,” “financial difficulties,” and “consideration.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “cleared extra examinations,” although this is not a natural collocation in this context. Some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “I got to know about this advertisement from it” is awkward, and “positive response” sounds less natural than a direct expression of interest in hearing from the couple. Aim for more precise, natural phrases suited to a formal application letter, and avoid repeating general terms such as “job.” Greater control of collocations and a slightly broader range of language for teaching experience and working with children would make the letter more fluent and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the message remains easy to understand. For example, “I would like to do this job because I am facing financial difficulties” clearly links a reason to your application. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “To begin with,I,” a space is needed after the comma; “I have recently completed my bachelor degree” needs a possessive form (“bachelor’s degree”); and “I am living here in Australia for the past six years” would be more accurate as “I have been living in Australia for the past six years.” Review articles, possessives, and tense choices, and proofread punctuation. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control while preserving your clear meaning.
