Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter regarding the advertisement you placed in the magazine. I think I perfectly fit into this position.

Most suitable reason is that I have been living here in China since my childhood, and started working as a language coach for past five years. I have been interacting with a lot of foreigners, guiding them and teaching them Chinese language.

Furthermore, I can take of the children being a Big brother, as I am used to take care of my sister's daughter. I can engage them in different physical acivities and also teach Yoga to them because in China we have a tradition to do certain exercises daily. This way they will be physically active too. Moreover, I can cook for them the dishes I know like Kung pao chicken , noodles etc. I know children these days like noodles a lot. This will boost their bonding with me.

To be honest, I am coming to Austrailia for couple of years on a scholarship. I was quite nervous to come because of the expenses of renting an appartment and the food etc, but after your advertisement I was a bit relaxed as I perfectly fit into this as this will help me with my expenses in a new country and I can easily look after your children as well, both side by side.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Alo

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain your experience teaching Chinese, offer childcare, exercise and cooking, and give your reasons for seeking the position. The examples about teaching for five years and caring for your niece make your suitability relevant, while the scholarship and living costs explain your motivation. The family-help section is particularly detailed; by comparison, your teaching approach is less developed, as you do not say how you would make lessons suitable for the children. The reason for wanting the job is clear, but focusing mainly on expenses makes the benefit to the family less prominent. To strengthen the letter, add a specific teaching idea and balance your personal reasons with what you hope to contribute.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce your application, describe your suitability and additional help, explain your motivation, and close politely. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “To be honest” help signal shifts between ideas. However, several points are packed into long paragraphs, especially the section listing childcare, yoga and cooking, so the reader has to work to distinguish the separate offers. Some links also feel mechanical, and “This will boost their bonding with me” does not clearly connect the cooking offer to the intended result. Use shorter, focused paragraphs and make references explicit—for example, explain how sharing meals could help you build rapport with the children.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “language coach,” “scholarship,” and “physically active.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “look after your children” and “bonding.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal for an application letter: “perfectly fit into this position,” “take of the children,” and “boost their bonding” are not natural in context. Spelling errors such as “Austrailia,” “appartment,” and “acivities” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural phrases and check spelling carefully; a more professional register would make your suitability sound more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more extended sentence forms, and most of your meaning remains clear. For example, the sentence beginning “I was quite nervous to come” combines your circumstances and motivation, while “I can engage them…” presents an additional offer. Some grammatical errors remain, including the missing article in “for couple of years,” the incorrect form in “I am used to take care,” and the missing object in “I can take of the children.” The final sentence also joins several ideas in a way that makes the relationship between them less clear. Review article use, verb patterns after “used to,” and sentence boundaries. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
