Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Virk,

I read your advertisement yesterday in newspapers. You are looking for a good tutor for their children about our language. When i see this news then i decided to teach their babies.

First of all, I am done with Masters Of Arts in Punjabi language that is suitable for you and your children. I completed my degree in few years later and i am doing job in a college as a professor in punjabi language. That’s why I think I am eligible for this job.

Secondly, If you agree then I visit to your house for teaching which is very convenient for you because you are already working. Furthermore, I live in your near by which is comfortable for you and me. However, If any problem for taking class at fix timing then I can adjust timing like as evening or morning.

Lastly, I really need this job because I have financial issues So This job helps for me. I have some personal issues whichever I can not do job. So if you agree for this then you can give chance for me.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Parm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: suitability, additional help, and reasons for applying. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of suitability focuses only on the degree, and the reasons for wanting the job are slightly vague and repetitive. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening is slightly confused regarding the recipients (referring to 'their' children instead of 'your'). To improve, you should expand on how your teaching experience would specifically benefit the children and provide more professional reasons for your interest in the position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use basic cohesive devices like 'First of all,' 'Secondly,' and 'Lastly' to signal the progression of your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is unclear, such as the shift between 'your children' and 'their children' in the introduction. The use of linking words is functional but could be more varied to improve the overall flow and logical progression of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'good tutor,' 'doing job,' and 'financial issues.' There are some awkward collocations, such as 'I am done with Masters Of Arts' and 'I live in your near by.' To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise professional terminology related to teaching and employment, and avoid informal phrasing. Expanding your range of adjectives and verbs would make your writing more engaging and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter, including issues with verb tense ('I completed my degree in few years later'), article usage ('in newspapers'), and sentence structure ('If any problem for taking class at fix timing'). While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are noticeable and occur in both simple and complex sentence attempts. You need to focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed accurately. Proofreading for basic errors like capitalization and word order would significantly improve your score.
