Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Roy,

I am writing to apply for a language tutor as I have seen this advertisement in a local news paper.

There are some reasons why I believe I am capable for this role. Firstly, Gujrati is my mother tongue as a native speaker my fluency is excellent. Moreover, I have experienced to teach this language at ABC school especially age group 7-12 years. As you are looking for your children, my qualification suits perfectly based on your requirements.

I could teach a new language in an interesting way which make learning lessons more enjoyable and educational. Apart from teaching, if you wish to look after them, I will be able to do babysitting in the day time.

I have moved this place recently, and I have not find a job in this area. If I am offered for this position, I will manage my daily expenses effectively. Furthermore, utilizing time in a productive way will help me keep away from mental stress.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Raj Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your suitability, offering additional help, and stating your reasons for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention your experience at 'ABC school', providing more specific details about your teaching methodology or your interaction with children would have strengthened your response. Additionally, the reason for wanting the job focuses heavily on your personal financial situation, which is acceptable but could be balanced with more enthusiasm for the cultural exchange or the opportunity to work with a family in Australia.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a formal closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Apart from', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. While these are effective, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between your personal circumstances and your professional suitability is smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'native speaker', 'fluency', and 'productive'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'I have not find a job' (should be 'found') and 'I have experienced to teach' (should be 'I have experience teaching'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band score. Focusing on collocations and more precise verbs will help improve this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing to apply for a language tutor' (you are applying for a position, not the tutor), 'make learning lessons' (should be 'makes'), and 'I have moved this place' (should be 'to this place'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and preposition usage. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
