Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr and Mrs Brown,
This letter is to apply for a job posting about teaching a foreign language to your children for one year.
I possess experience of working with children and a degree in Hindi literature. I have been working as an educator from last four years. This not only makes me comfortable around children but also helps me in keeping them engaged by playing games, introducing new activities to them and so on.
Moreover, I would be happy to babysit your children in your absence and can do some household work if needed. By taking them to the Hindu festivals and restaurants in your city they can build strong foundation of the language.
The main reason to get this job opportunity is that I want to improve my English language skills. It now can become possible by residing with a native Australian family for a year. Furthermore, my keen interest of learning about other cultures and its traditions.
I hope you take my application into consideration. I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Deep

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability through your teaching experience and degree, offer additional help such as babysitting and household tasks, and provide a personal reason for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, though the explanation regarding how you would teach the language could be slightly more detailed to fully flesh out the 'suitability' aspect. Overall, the response is well-focused and addresses the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'This not only... but also' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the letter. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. For instance, the link between the second and third paragraphs could be tighter. However, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'educator', 'residing', and 'consideration'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'keen interest of learning' (should be 'in learning') and 'build strong foundation' (missing an article 'a'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would push the score into the higher bands. The language is functional and appropriate for a formal letter, but more idiomatic or precise phrasing would enhance the quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'working as an educator from last four years' (should be 'for the last four years') and 'The main reason to get this job... is that I want to improve' (slightly awkward phrasing). Additionally, 'Furthermore, my keen interest of learning...' is a sentence fragment lacking a main verb. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the communication remains clear. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring all sentences are complete, as well as refining the use of prepositions.
