Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Mr and Mrs Brown,

This letter is in response to your advertisement looking for a person who can teach an international language to your children for one year.

Why I think, I would be the suitable person for this role is because I possess good communication skills and experience of working with children. My patient and calming disposition will help children to learn in interesting ways. Being a native French speaker, I can alter many ways of teaching it in enjoyable ways in all four mediums, writing, listening, reading and speaking.

I could also help the family in several other ways. For example, I will be happy to assist children in their homework, participating in outdoor activities, doing household tasks if needed and babysitting children in your absence. By taking children to French art galleries, introducing them to French food, music they can learn about the language in better way such as its accent, they way people socialize and so on.

The main reason to get this position is that I will be able to experience life in another part of the world while living with a native family. During this one year, we can learn a lot of things from each other's cultures and can celebrate festivals together.

I hope you take my application into consideration. I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Deep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your communication skills and patient disposition. You also provide relevant examples of how you can assist the family, such as helping with homework and household tasks. Finally, your motivation for wanting the job—experiencing a new culture and living with a native family—is well-articulated. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. All parts of the task are well-developed, and the response maintains a consistent focus throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use clear topic sentences to introduce your points. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'By taking', and 'During this one year' are used effectively to link ideas. The progression of information is smooth, moving from your qualifications to your additional contributions and finally your personal motivations. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, which makes the letter easy to follow. The overall structure is coherent and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal application letter. Phrases like 'possess good communication skills', 'patient and calming disposition', and 'take my application into consideration' are well-chosen. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there are a few minor instances where word choice could be more precise, such as 'alter many ways of teaching' or 'in better way'. However, these do not impede communication. You successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to teaching and cultural exchange, which enhances the quality of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'Why I think, I would be the suitable person' (which is slightly awkward phrasing) and 'the way people socialize' (missing 'the' before 'way'). However, these are rare and do not interfere with the clarity of your message. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the overall grammatical control is sufficient to support a high band score.
