Student answer (Band 8.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the position of teaching your two children my native language for a year. I was excited to see your advertisement and believe I would be an excellent choice for this role.
I think I am suitable for the job because I have experience teaching students of different age groups. I am patient, responsible, and enjoy helping children learn in a fun and engaging way. I always adapt my teaching methods to suit each child's learning style, using games, stories, and everyday conversations to make lessons enjoyable and effective.
Apart from teaching the language, I would be happy to help your family in other ways. For example, I could assist the children with their homework, prepare simple meals, take them to nearby activities, or help with light household tasks. I enjoy spending time with children and creating a positive and supportive environment for them.
The main reason I would like this job is that I have always wanted to experience Australian culture while sharing my own language and traditions. I believe living with an Australian family would improve my English communication skills and allow me to learn more about your way of life. At the same time, I would be delighted to introduce your children to my language and culture.
Thank you for considering my application. I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Satwinder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your teaching experience and pedagogical approach. You also provide a comprehensive list of additional services you could offer, such as homework assistance and light household tasks. Finally, your motivation for wanting the job—experiencing Australian culture and improving your English—is clearly articulated. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is consistently clear throughout. You have successfully met all requirements of the task with well-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You use effective cohesive devices such as 'Apart from teaching', 'For example', and 'At the same time' to link your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the opening and closing salutations are correct for a formal letter. The flow of information is natural and professional throughout the entire piece.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context of a job application. Phrases like 'engaging way', 'learning style', 'supportive environment', and 'introduce your children to my language' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it remains somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations related to education or cultural exchange. However, there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and the language is consistently appropriate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5
Your grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of sentence structures used effectively. You successfully employ complex sentences, such as 'I always adapt my teaching methods to suit each child's learning style, using games, stories, and everyday conversations to make lessons enjoyable and effective.' Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant grammatical errors. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is clear, error-free, and demonstrates a strong command of English syntax, which is characteristic of a high-level response.
