Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I came across your tuition advertisement for teaching English language to your two children. I am writing this to express my interest in this job. Over the years, I have taught English language course to many students. As a native speaker and have a great command over this language, I can help your children in the challenges they are facing. My unique teaching approach will allow your children to grasp complex topics easily and will helped them to better score in their exams.
Apart from teaching English, I can also help your children in other subjects like Mathematics and Science. I can assist them in completing their home assignments and if they need any help in understanding a particular topic in these subjects, I can assist them in it too.
I am looking for an additional part time job to cover my monthly expenses. Also, I believe the best way to give back to the community is by teaching what you have learned.
I am looking forward to hearing back from you.
Best Regards,

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your experience and native-speaker status, offer additional help with subjects like Mathematics and Science, and provide clear reasons for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on your teaching methodology or provide more specific examples of how you have helped students in the past, which would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more comprehensive engagement with the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a professional closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from' and 'Also' to link your thoughts. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to make the flow between sentences feel more natural and less mechanical. Ensure that the progression of ideas remains smooth throughout the entire letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'tuition advertisement', 'native speaker', and 'complex topics'. The language is generally accurate and conveys your meaning clearly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the more sophisticated, less common lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and varied synonyms to avoid repetition and demonstrate a more flexible command of the English language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are some grammatical errors that slightly affect the flow. For example, 'have a great command' should be 'I have a great command', and 'will helped them' should be 'will help them'. Additionally, 'taught English language course' requires an article or pluralization. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will help you achieve a higher score.
