Student answer (Band 7.0)

Suitable: easy to communicate, travel

Could do: Look after their child

Reasons: unemployed

Dear sir or madam,

I hope all is well.

My name is Shivam, and I have seen an advertisement for a language tutor role advertised by you in a local newspaper.

I am writing this letter to express my interest to apply for the same role. There are few personal qualities a person should have to teach a new language or to become successful tutor which I believe I have it all. I have profound knowledge of language, its grammar, vocabulary, tenses and all.

In addition, I have a calm mind, I am patience, and most importantly I do not rush to finish the course. I give children their time to understand. As I believe, it is a language, and everyone has a different pace to learn.

Furthermore, if I would be appointed as a language tutor, as leverage I would also look after the children. Thus, this way as parent you will not get worried about your children, and can do your work without any tension.

Also, I am unemployed for a such long time now, and I have a prior experience in a tutoring field which would justice my qualification for the job.

I look forward to hear positive from you.

Thank you and have a pleasant day.

Sincerely,

Shivam Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain your suitability by highlighting your language knowledge and patience, offer to look after the children, and provide a reason for wanting the job. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. For instance, stating you are 'unemployed' as a reason for wanting the job is a bit blunt and lacks professional tone. To improve, you should focus more on your passion for teaching or your interest in the Australian cultural experience to make your motivation sound more compelling and professional for a potential employer.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Thus' to connect your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'as leverage I would also look after the children.' The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. To reach a higher band, ensure that your transitions between sentences feel more natural and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'profound,' 'appointed,' and 'qualification.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I have it all' (should be 'I possess them all') and 'do justice my qualification' (should be 'justify my application'). While these errors do not impede communication, they show a need for more precise collocation. Expanding your vocabulary to include more idiomatic or precise professional terms would help elevate your writing to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am patience' (should be 'I am patient'), 'I look forward to hear' (should be 'I look forward to hearing'), and 'for a such long time' (should be 'for such a long time'). Additionally, the opening 'Dear sir or madam' should be capitalized as 'Dear Sir or Madam.' While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your control over verb forms and articles will improve your accuracy.
