Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Smith,

I am writing this letter to apply for the language tutor job for your Children. I have recently seen the advertisement on Kajiji and I am interested to teach Punjabi language as required.

I am experienced in teaching Punjabi at a private school in Melbourne, and I know the structure as well as the syllabus and how to manage listening, writing, reading and speaking modules. I will personalize the course contents based on learning speed and accuracy of the children.

Besides teaching the language I would like to draw your attention towards chess classes, anyone in the family who is interested will receive it as a compliment. I will also be providing discounted sessions on overall academic subjects for your kids.

I am a retired professor and I want to have a part time job to kill some time. I would appreciate

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: suitability, additional services, and reasons for applying. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which is a significant constraint. Furthermore, the letter ends abruptly mid-sentence ('I would appreciate'), which leaves the task incomplete. While the ideas are relevant, the lack of a proper closing and the failure to meet the length requirement prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure you complete the letter with a formal sign-off and expand on your reasons for wanting the job to ensure you comfortably exceed the word count.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Besides teaching' and 'I am also' helps the flow of ideas. However, the abrupt ending significantly disrupts the coherence of the final section. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points. To improve, ensure that each paragraph is fully developed and that the letter concludes with a coherent closing statement and a formal sign-off, which is standard for this task type.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'syllabus', 'personalize', and 'academic subjects'. However, there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'kill some time', which is too informal for a professional application letter. The word 'compliment' is also used incorrectly; the intended word was likely 'complimentary'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic structures. To improve, use more professional collocations and ensure precise word choice to convey your experience and enthusiasm effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'I am experienced in teaching... and I know the structure'. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'interested to teach' (should be 'interested in teaching') and 'the Punjabi language' (the article is unnecessary here). Punctuation is generally correct, but the incomplete final sentence is a major issue. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are noticeable. To improve, focus on verb patterns and ensure that all sentences are fully formed and grammatically sound.
