Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Myself Susan and I have recently seen an advertisement given by you for a language teacher for your kids. I am writing to you applying for this position to teach your children language. Talkng about my qualifications, I have completd my Post Graduate into Teaching and Learning and have also been teaching and home tutoring students for the past few years and also have a lot of care, affection and love towards children.

I would love to be with your kids and make an atmosphere worth learning using different ways of engaging and adapting. I can also spend time with the kids during their free time and do alot of art and productive learning work and play with them.

I always wanted to experience and live with an Australian family and this would always be memorable for me as I would be delighted to take up on this job role aligning with my passion and love for kids as well.

I would love to hear back from you.

Awaiting your response.

Regards,

Susan Amiri

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task. You explain your suitability by mentioning your postgraduate qualification and tutoring experience, describe additional contributions like art and play, and state your motivation for wanting to live with an Australian family. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter of application. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention 'different ways of engaging', you could have provided a more specific example of a teaching method to make your application more persuasive. The opening salutation 'Dear Sir/Madam' is acceptable, but since the prompt mentions a 'couple', 'Dear Mr and Mrs [Name]' or 'Dear Sir and Madam' would have been more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from your qualifications to your proposed activities and finally your motivation. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Talkng about my qualifications' and 'I can also', which help the flow. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the natural flow of the text. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'qualifications', 'tutoring', and 'position'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'Post Graduate into Teaching' (should be 'in') and 'take up on this job role' (which is slightly unnatural). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited; using more precise collocations or descriptive adjectives would elevate the quality of your writing. Spelling errors like 'Talkng' and 'completd' also detract slightly from the overall impression, though they do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'Myself Susan and I have recently seen' is grammatically incorrect (should be 'My name is Susan and I...'), and 'Post Graduate into Teaching' contains a preposition error. There are also minor punctuation and capitalization slips throughout the text. While you attempt complex sentences, the control over them is not always consistent. To reach a higher band, you should focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound and free from minor errors.
