Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I saw an advertisement about teaching a language to your two children. I came as a immigrant here, my 1st language is Gujarati and I have more than 20 years of experience in teaching industry. I would really like to take an opportunity to teach your children Gujarati language.
Also I can help babysit your children in order to help you. As I just arrived few weeks ago and I am looking for employment so if you could give me this opportunity I would be more than happy to teach.
I will also attach my resume so that you can know more about me, and after if you like, let me know so that we can discuss about the fees and when to start the class from.
Thank you,
Yours Faithfully,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: suitability, additional help, and reasons for wanting the job. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. The explanation of suitability is brief, and the reasons for wanting the job are not fully expanded. To improve, you should provide more detail about your teaching methodology or specific experiences with children to make your application more persuasive. Because the length requirement was not met, the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a basic logical structure, with an introduction, body, and closing. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and somewhat repetitive (e.g., 'Also', 'As I'). Paragraphing is present but could be more effectively used to separate the different requirements of the prompt. The flow between sentences is functional but lacks the sophisticated transitions required for higher bands. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. Phrases like 'teaching industry' and 'take an opportunity' are understandable but lack natural collocation. There are some minor errors, such as 'I came as a immigrant' (should be 'an immigrant') and 'teaching industry' (should be 'the teaching profession'). To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to education and professional correspondence, and ensure articles are used correctly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and compound sentences. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I came as a immigrant' (article error), 'I just arrived few weeks ago' (missing article), and 'start the class from' (unnecessary preposition). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structures are somewhat repetitive. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of complex sentence structures and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and prepositions.
