Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. John,

I am writing in regards to applying for a job of a language teacher for your children.

I have been working as a secondary school teacher for last 3 years and my primary subject is local language. I have good relevant experience to teach children by using latest techniques. I can explain them all the concepts, sentence formation, therefore, they would be able to talk in local language with all of your loved ones. Apart from this, I can provide assistance to complete their school homework that will save your time eventually.

Along with full-time employment, I am pursuing my masters degree, thus, extra work will help me to earn more, as a result, I would be able to pay my college fee by myself. If you would hire me, I will not disappoint you.

Thank you for considering my application in advance and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Muskan Garg

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: your suitability as a teacher, additional help for the family, and your reasons for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention 'latest techniques,' you do not specify what these are, and your reason for wanting the job is purely financial. Expanding on your passion for teaching or your interest in the Australian cultural context would have provided a more well-rounded response. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the content could be more detailed to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this,' 'Along with,' and 'as a result' to connect your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs feels slightly abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that the relationship between sentences is always explicitly clear to the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant professional terms like 'full-time employment' and 'pursuing my masters degree.' However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common language. There are minor issues with collocation, such as 'applying for a job of a language teacher' (should be 'the job of a language teacher'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to education and professional experience to demonstrate a wider range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'for last 3 years' (missing 'the'), 'explain them all the concepts' (should be 'explain all the concepts to them'), and 'If you would hire me' (should be 'If you hire me'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and conditional sentence structures will help improve your accuracy and range.
