Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John and Nancy,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I am interested in the advertisement that you published in the newspaper. I think I am the best option to teach your children Spanish, because I am born and brought up in Spain.

First of all, since I was raised in Spain, I had a good exposure in this language, also I had studied this language as a part of my curriculum and completed the course with distinction. Moreover, I have almost 2 year experience in babysitting, thereby, I could work as a babysitter whenever you are busy.

Furthermore, I am currently enrolled in Melbourne university for masters and looking for a part time job for my expenses. I usually charge $15 per hour for teaching language which is way cheaper when compare with professionals.

Thank you for giving attention on this matter and I am hoping a replay from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Jithu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your suitability, offering additional help, and stating your reasons for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention your experience in babysitting, you could have expanded slightly on how this makes you a better candidate for a family setting. The letter covers the requirements well enough to meet the criteria for a band 6.0, as all parts are addressed, though some areas could be more fully developed to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. While these are functional, the progression is sometimes a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the different points of the letter. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between your personal background and your current situation in Melbourne flows more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'curriculum', 'distinction', and 'enrolled'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I am born and brought up' (should be 'I was born and raised') and 'giving attention on this matter' (should be 'giving attention to this matter'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more idiomatic expressions or precise professional terminology would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I had a good exposure in this language' (should be 'to this language'), '2 year experience' (should be '2 years of experience'), and 'when compare with' (should be 'when compared with'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions, as these are recurring issues in your writing.
