Student answer (Band 8.0)

Writing

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the position of teaching your two children my native language for a year. I believe I would be an excellent choice because I have experience teaching children and enjoy creating fun, interactive lessons that help them learn quickly.

For the past two years, I have worked as a private language tutor for children aged 6 to 12. I am patient, responsible, and able to adapt my teaching methods according to each child's learning style. I believe that learning a language should be enjoyable, so I often use games, songs, and storytelling to make lessons interesting.

In addition to teaching, I would be happy to help your family with light household chores, prepare simple meals, or assist your children with their homework and outdoor activities. I can also look after them if you need someone to supervise them while you are at work.

The main reason I want this job is that I have always wanted to experience Australian culture and improve my English while living with a local family. I believe this opportunity would allow me to develop both personally and professionally. At the same time, I would be delighted to share my language and culture with your children.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you and hope to have the opportunity to become a member of your family for the coming year.

Yours faithfully,

Vp

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your experience as a private tutor, offer additional help such as household chores and supervision, and provide a clear motivation for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. The letter follows the required structure and maintains a consistent, professional, and helpful tone throughout, which is exactly what is expected for this task type.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from your qualifications to your additional contributions and finally your motivations. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition to,' 'For the past two years,' and 'At the same time,' which help guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, making the letter easy to follow and professional in appearance.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal letter. Phrases like 'interactive lessons,' 'adapt my teaching methods,' and 'personally and professionally' show a good command of language. The word choice is precise and natural throughout the text. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it remains within a standard range. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions, though the current level is more than sufficient for a clear and effective communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of complex sentence structures used correctly. For example, your use of subordinate clauses in sentences like 'I believe that learning a language should be enjoyable, so I often use games...' shows good control. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and you demonstrate a strong grasp of tense usage and sentence construction, which is consistent with a high level of proficiency.
