Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Lawlor,

I am writing about your recent advertisement about teaching your son English. I have been teaching history from 3 years and I just moved to Australia around 2 months ago.

Although I did not teach any foreign language to two years child yet, I believe, I would be suitable for this position because I am reliable, patience and creative person, which is the most essential skills to teach young children.

I would love to help any way I could do. I am willing to take your son out for a walk, play and relax, giving you extra time to do another chores. I can also assist in cooking, cleaning and laundry as I can learn so many different things from you guys.

The most prominent reason why I want to do this job is leaning Australian culture and using my spare time more efficiently. When I will stay with an Australia family, I would experience and learn tradition that would be convenient for me to gather knowledge. Also, this would be the most effective way to utilize my free time.

I would love to discuss more about this opportunity.

Yours faithfully,

Sukhpreet Kour

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your suitability, offering additional help, and stating your reasons for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention being 'reliable' and 'creative', you could have provided a specific example of how these traits helped you in your previous teaching role. Additionally, the prompt asks to teach 'two children', but you refer to 'your son' in the singular throughout the letter. Ensuring closer attention to the specific details in the prompt would improve your score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Also', and 'The most prominent reason' to connect your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the inconsistent use of 'son' versus the prompt's 'two children'. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your pronouns and references consistently match the information provided in the task instructions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'advertisement', 'essential', 'assist', and 'efficiently'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'teaching history from 3 years' (should be 'for 3 years') and 'doing another chores' (should be 'other chores'). You also use 'leaning' instead of 'learning'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations and spelling. Expanding your vocabulary to include more idiomatic expressions or precise verbs would enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I did not teach any foreign language to two years child yet' (should be 'I have not yet taught a foreign language to two-year-old children') and 'When I will stay with an Australia family' (should be 'When I stay with an Australian family'). These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and the correct use of articles and pluralization.
