IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have seen an advertisement from a couple, who live in Australia, for someone to teach their two children your language for a year. Write a letter to the couple. In your letter
- explain why you think you would be suitable for the job
- say what else you could do for the family
- give your reasons for wanting the job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
As I was flicking through the pages of an esteemed daily, I saw an advertisement for the requirement of a Spanish teacher for a year. I am confident enough that I will be a perfect fit for this role because not only I am fluent in Spanish but I have also cleared several Spanish language tests in recent years.
As I learned from the advertisement that you need a tutor for two children, I can give an additional discount of 15%. Moreover, I have recently started providing home tuitions so that parents can also monitor the progress of their children.
Would you be kind enough to consider my application? Currently I am preparing for a full-time job as a Spanish teacher in Australia and nowadays teachers must have a freelancing work experience as a tutor for a minimum of two years to get selected. I have been teaching since one year and have received an outstanding rating of 4.8 out of 5 on google reviews.
Hoping for a prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Achin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your suitability by mentioning your fluency and test results, suggested additional help by offering home tuition, and provided your reasons for wanting the job, specifically your need for work experience. However, the tone is slightly inconsistent; you address the couple as 'Sir/Madam' despite the prompt stating they are a couple, and the offer of a '15% discount' is somewhat unusual in a personal letter context, making the response feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure your ideas are more naturally integrated into the context of a personal letter to a family.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'As I learned' to connect your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The reference to 'a full-time job as a Spanish teacher in Australia' feels slightly disconnected from the initial purpose of the letter. Improving the flow between your personal goals and the family's needs would enhance the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary, such as 'esteemed daily', 'perfect fit', and 'prompt response'. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'providing home tuitions' (the word 'tuition' is generally uncountable in this context) and 'teaching since one year' (which should be 'teaching for one year'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the precision and naturalness required for higher bands. Focusing on more idiomatic expressions and correct usage of uncountable nouns would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'not only I am fluent... but I have also cleared...'. However, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'not only I am' should be 'not only am I' (inversion after negative adverbials). Additionally, 'nowadays teachers must have a freelancing work experience' is slightly awkward; 'freelance work experience' would be more natural. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Pay closer attention to word order and preposition usage.
