Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter as i have seen your advertisement of teaching language to your two children.

I think I am suitable for this job of teaching your children because i have done a small course in this language. I have given 3 exams of this language in which i have got quit good score . So I think i will be able to teach your children as i have also worked as a part time teacher in the school.

As I have done part time job in school I have a good idea of how to teach children in easy and fun way . Your two children will enjoy my teaching . In case of any difficulty or if you need any help I will be there to help you .For example if you want to go out for grocery or any shopping I will be with your children till you come home. I will try my best to teach your children in easy way .

I need this job as i want to buy a bike . I want to buy a bike from my earnings. To make my parents feel proud of me. Hoping for positive reply from you .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your suitability, offering additional help, and stating your reasons for wanting the job. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir/Madam' is slightly impersonal given the prompt specifies writing to a 'couple'. The ideas are relevant, though the explanation of your motivation—wanting to buy a bike—is quite simplistic and could be developed further to sound more professional. To improve, ensure your reasons for wanting the job align better with the context of working for a family, such as a desire to gain cross-cultural experience or a passion for education.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. There is a clear progression of ideas from your qualifications to your additional services and finally your motivation. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For instance, you frequently start sentences with 'I' or 'As I'. Using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'In addition to this', 'Consequently') would help the flow of the letter feel more natural and sophisticated. Paragraphing is present, but the transitions between ideas could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'advertisement', 'part-time teacher', and 'grocery'. However, the range is limited, and there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'quit good score' (should be 'quite a good score') and 'in easy and fun way' (should be 'in an easy and fun way'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and collocations related to teaching and childcare, such as 'pedagogical approach', 'supervision', or 'educational activities'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several recurring grammatical errors, particularly with the use of the first-person pronoun 'i' (which must always be capitalized) and missing articles (e.g., 'in school' instead of 'in a school'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as spacing errors before commas and periods. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will significantly improve your accuracy.
