Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing well, I am writing this letter to express my interest in a job opening that you have posted on local community centre.

I read in the job posting that you are looking for someone to teach English to your two children. I believe I am the best candidate for this job position. As I am currently pursuing Bachelor's in English, I have depth knowledge of subject and I can teach you children. Apart from teaching English language I can help them to build their communication skills. As they need to know how to communicate with other people, apart from, just speaking the same language.

Actually I am in my final year of university, I want to pursue my carrier as a teacher of English subject. This is great opportunity for my gain some experience that will be really valuable for in my future. I am looking forward to teach you children. please let me know if you need any additional information from me.

Sincerely,

Maninderpal Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your suitability, offering additional help, and stating your reasons for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, when you mention helping with communication skills, you could have provided a specific example of an activity or method you would use. Similarly, your reasons for wanting the job could be expanded to show more enthusiasm or a deeper connection to the family's needs. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the content could be more detailed to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the different requirements of the task. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For instance, you use 'As' to start several sentences in the second and third paragraphs, which makes the flow feel a bit predictable. Using a wider variety of linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition to this' would improve the flow and help connect your ideas more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pursuing', 'candidate', and 'valuable'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you wrote 'depth knowledge of subject' instead of 'in-depth knowledge of the subject' and 'gain some experience' instead of 'gain experience'. Additionally, 'carrier' is used incorrectly; you meant 'career'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more specific professional collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'posted on local community centre' (missing 'a'), 'teach you children' (should be 'your'), and 'valuable for in my future' (incorrect preposition usage). There are also minor punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in the first sentence. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
