Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to your advertisement seeking someone to teach your children a language. I am really interested in applying for this job. I believe I would be well-suited for this job.

I am from India and have a strong command of Hindi, as I was a Hindi teacher there. I think I can teach this language in a very interesting way. I know how to engage children to learn a language. I know English very well, which will help me to connect with your young ones. I have a friendly nature that will help your children to ask any queries without hesitation.

I can also help with your household chores and tasks. I can give free tuition to the parents about speaking my language. I can explain about Indian culture and traditional values, which will help to know more about India and its culture.

I really want to explore the Australian family's culture and their lifestyles. I want this job to know more about your culture, also. Moreover, this job will help me to save some money for my future studies.

I look forward to hearing from you, and I will provide any further information if you require,

Yours faithfully,

Saloni

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly explained your suitability by highlighting your teaching background and language skills. You also provided relevant additional services, such as household assistance and cultural exchange, and clearly stated your motivations for wanting the position. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of your teaching methods or elaborate slightly more on how your cultural knowledge would specifically benefit the children, rather than just the parents.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct theme, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'I also', though the transitions between some sentences feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother by using a wider range of cohesive devices, such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in addition to this'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows you to communicate your points clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'command of Hindi', 'hesitation', and 'traditional values'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly simple phrasing. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate more precise or sophisticated vocabulary. For instance, instead of 'I know English very well', you could use 'I possess a high level of proficiency in English'. Expanding your range of collocations and using more descriptive adjectives would significantly enhance your lexical profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good control of basic sentence structures, and your writing is generally error-free, which ensures that your message is always clear. You use a mix of simple and compound sentences. However, there is a lack of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, which are necessary for higher bands. For example, instead of 'I have a friendly nature that will help your children...', you could use 'Possessing a friendly nature, I am confident that I can encourage your children to ask questions without hesitation.' Increasing the variety of your sentence structures will improve your score.
