Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Smit,

I am writing this letter for French teaching job from advertisement poster.

From a couple of days ago I went to a park for regular exercise and show your poster about job. I am fluent in French language as I belong from Quebec, Canada. As right now I am on my work permit and have job till afternoon 1pm after that I free for a whole day and your children have school till 2 so it is better matching time for both of us. In Addition, I can speak, write and talk in French as that is my first language. Most important is I also have teaching experience back in my home country so it is easy to tech your kids with the planning.

Furthermore, I also can cook for your kids before they came form school with the delicious dishes so they can focus in study without any hunger. The former reason for this job is I have to pay loan for my car and rent for house because most of money I send to home for financial help to my parents and little sister.

I look forward to your positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Om Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: your suitability, additional help, and your reasons for applying. You clearly explain your background as a native French speaker from Quebec and your teaching experience. You also offer to cook for the children and explain your financial motivations. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For example, the explanation of your financial situation is a bit abrupt and could be framed more professionally. While you have covered the requirements, the tone is occasionally informal and lacks the polish expected in a formal application letter. To improve, ensure that your reasons for wanting the job are presented in a way that sounds more professional and focused on the family's needs rather than just your own financial requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In Addition', 'Furthermore', and 'The former reason'. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or are used incorrectly, such as 'The former reason', which is not the standard way to introduce a motivation. The flow between sentences is generally clear, but the connection between your work permit status and your availability could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter, but the overall progression of ideas could be more sophisticated to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'fluent', 'teaching experience', and 'delicious dishes'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and phrasing, such as 'from advertisement poster', 'belong from Quebec', and 'tech your kids'. These errors indicate a limited control over collocations and formal register. While the meaning is always clear, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on learning common collocations used in professional correspondence and avoid translating directly from your first language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I am writing this letter for French teaching job' (missing articles), 'I am on my work permit and have job' (missing articles), and 'before they came form school' (spelling/tense error). There are also issues with prepositions and subject-verb agreement, such as 'it is easy to tech your kids'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing. Focusing on basic article usage and verb tense consistency would significantly improve your score.
