Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Gurpreet,

I am writing this letter to you, because I saw your advertisement that you need a Punjabi language instructor for your children.

First of all, I will introduce my self, my name is Parminder Singh Gill. I have Master's in Punjabi and 5 years of teaching experience from India, which make me suitable for this job. Apart from this, I also have bachelor in physical educational and I worked as a district level coach with a football team. So in addition to language coaching I can provide additional service by teaching your children some physical activities.

I recently moved in Australia, right now I do not have any other job. That is why I can give full focus on your children, which would be helpful for the and for me as well. It is a win win situation where I can generate a source of income and you get a full time instructor. I would wait for your response.

Yours faithfully,

Parminder Singh Gill

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability through your Master's degree and teaching experience, offer additional services related to physical education, and provide a clear reason for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention your background, expanding slightly on your teaching methodology or how you would engage the children would have made the response more persuasive and fully developed. Overall, the task is addressed effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Apart from this', and 'In addition to', which help the reader follow your points. However, the flow between sentences could be improved; some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the sentence 'which would be helpful for the and for me as well' contains a typo that disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'instructor', 'advertisement', and 'physical educational'. There are some minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'I recently moved in Australia' (should be 'to') and 'bachelor in physical educational' (should be 'a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, there is limited use of less common or more sophisticated lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I have Master's' (missing 'a'), 'which make me suitable' (should be 'makes'), and 'I recently moved in Australia'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences or comma splices, such as 'First of all, I will introduce my self, my name is...'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
