Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the tutoring position you advertised. As a native speaker with a passion for education, I would love the opportunity to teach your two children my language for the upcoming year.

I believe I am highly suitable for this role due to my extensive background in working with young learners. I hold a degree in education and have spent the last three years working as an elementary language tutor. During this time, I have learned how to make language lessons both enjoyable and effective. I am particularly good at encouraging shy children to participate and can use a variety of activities, such as storytelling, role plays and simple conversations, to help them develop their speaking skills.

As well as teaching, I would be willing to contribute to your family in other ways. I could help the children with their schoolwork, take them to the park or library, and prepare meals when you are busy. I would also be delighted to introduce them to aspects of my culture, such as traditional celebrations, food and music.

I am keen to take up this opportunity because I have always wanted to experience living in Australia and become more familiar with its culture and lifestyle.

Thank you for considering my application.

Yours faithfully,

Diljot Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your suitability by highlighting your degree and experience, offered additional help such as meal preparation and cultural exchange, and provided a clear, personal reason for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a family, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the advertisement. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'As well as teaching' and 'During this time', to link your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. The opening and closing are appropriate for the task, and the overall structure is coherent and professional throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context. Phrases like 'native speaker', 'extensive background', and 'delighted to introduce' show a natural control of language. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the task well, it is functional rather than highly sophisticated. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations or idiomatic expressions related to teaching or cultural exchange, but your current range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is very strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use a variety of verb tenses correctly, such as the present perfect ('have always wanted') and the future ('I would be willing'). Punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The sentences are well-constructed, and the control over complex structures is consistent. You have demonstrated a high level of grammatical accuracy throughout the letter.
