Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr and Mrs Sharma,

I hope you are doing are well. I am writing regarding the advertisement to teach our language for a year. I would like to apply for this position happily.

I have completed my Masters in Punjabi and English back from India. Moreover, I was teacher in school and had gained valuable experience for five years of teaching classes from First to tenth. I possess to handle children in very polite and calm way. I do have skills to teach in easy to easy method and with fun, so they do not take anything as a burden. So, i think this position will be a good match for me.

Furthermore, I can teach them other subjects too in future, if you needed. Meanwhile, i can look after them in your absence. I came in Australia last year only and I was looking to do something in my spare time. Luckily, this post came. It will be great for me if I can start doing something to earn and spend my time. I will be very proud to teach your kids our mother tongue, as this is a part of our identity. Moreover, they will also learn about our history and culture.

I am excited to hear forward from you.

Yours faithfully,

Simran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability by detailing your educational background and teaching experience. You also suggest additional help, such as tutoring other subjects and childcare, and provide personal reasons for wanting the job, such as maintaining cultural identity. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a family. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how your specific teaching methods would benefit their children's language acquisition. Overall, the response is well-focused and addresses the task requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Meanwhile' to link your sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure supports the message well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'valuable experience', 'identity', and 'spare time'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'I came in Australia' (should be 'to') and 'I hope you are doing are well' (a grammatical slip). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat functional. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common vocabulary related to education and child development, such as 'pedagogical approach' or 'cultural heritage', to show greater flexibility and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I was teacher' (missing article), 'I possess to handle' (incorrect verb pattern), and 'I am excited to hear forward from you' (incorrect preposition). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and standard prepositional phrases will significantly improve your accuracy. Try to proofread your work specifically for these common slips.
