Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Mam and sir,

I am Dhruvi from Gujarat; I am writing in response to your advertisement for someone to teach your two children my language for a year. I am very interested in this opportunity and believe that I would be a suitable candidate.

I have a master's degree and several years of experience working with people from different backgrounds. I am fluent in many languages like Gujarati, Hindi and English, and I am patient and friendly and comfortable working with children. I don't rely on text and used game, song and stories to make it fun.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, as it is only 98 words long. Consequently, the ideas are significantly underdeveloped. While you have addressed the first bullet point (suitability), you have completely omitted the second bullet point (what else you could do for the family) and only briefly touched upon the third (reasons for wanting the job). To improve, you must expand on each requirement with specific details and examples to ensure the task is fully addressed. The current length is insufficient to demonstrate the level of development required for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear opening and a brief body paragraph. However, due to the brevity of the text, there is very little opportunity to demonstrate a range of cohesive devices. The transition between sentences is functional but basic. To improve, you should use a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly. Additionally, ensure that each bullet point is developed into its own paragraph to improve the overall structure and readability of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision expected at higher levels. Phrases like 'make it fun' and 'working with people' are quite generic. You have attempted to describe your teaching style, which is positive, but you need to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to education and personal attributes to demonstrate a wider lexical range. Focus on using more precise adjectives and verbs to describe your experience and your motivation for applying for this position.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammar is generally clear, and the meaning is easy to follow. However, there are some errors, such as 'used game, song and stories' (should be 'use games, songs, and stories') and the informal opening 'Dear Mam and sir' (should be 'Dear Sir or Madam'). The sentence structures are relatively simple, relying heavily on basic subject-verb-object patterns. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, while maintaining accuracy.
