Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Anna,
I am writing this letter in regards to the advertisement in the newspaper for someone to teach your two children in Australia. In this letter I would like to mention why I think I'm best suited for this role while having the flexibility of time.
Firstly, I live in Paris where I was born and raised and I will be visiting Australia for my summer break. I would like to assure you that not only am I a native french speaker but also a kinder garden teacher by profession. This makes me and my skills perfectly align with your job requirement.
On the other hands, I can also watch your kids whenever needed since I won't be having much to do in this four months of my summer break here in Australia.
In addition, the pay for this job is essential for my future plans as I'm saving up money for my next semester fee.
Yours sincerely
Jane

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability as a native speaker and kindergarten teacher, offer additional help with childcare, and state your financial motivation for the job. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention being a kindergarten teacher, you could have elaborated slightly more on how this experience would benefit their children specifically. The letter is well-structured and covers all requirements effectively, meeting the criteria for a solid performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hands', and 'In addition' to transition between ideas. While these are functional, the use of 'On the other hands' is grammatically incorrect (it should be 'On the other hand'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. The flow of information is easy to follow, and the relationship between ideas is generally clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'advertisement', 'flexibility', 'profession', and 'align'. There are some minor errors, such as 'kinder garden' (which should be one word: 'kindergarten') and the misuse of 'On the other hands'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the range of less common or more sophisticated collocations that would be required for a higher band score. The language is functional and appropriate for the context of a job application letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would like to assure you that not only am I a native french speaker but also a kinder garden teacher'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I won't be having much to do in this four months' (should be 'these four months') and the capitalization of 'french' (should be 'French'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You have demonstrated enough control to communicate your message effectively.
