Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Johnson,

My name is Jenefas, and I am writing in response to your advertisement for a Yoruba teacher for your two children, for the duration of a year. I would like the opportunity to fill the role.

I am a native Yoruba speaker, having learned the language growing up. In addition to being fluent in speaking the language, I also had the opportunity to learn to read and write in it as it was one of the courses offered throughout my high school education. This translates to not just teaching your children to speak the language, but they will also learn to read and write in it.

In addition to the lessons, I have babysitting experience and would love to use the opportunity to watch the kids for you whenever you need it. I could take them on excursions to places like parks, swimming pools or the museum and further enhance the language teaching by educating them in those settings.

I enjoy traveling and would like an extended visit to Australia for my next trip, so this role affords me the opportunity to not only visit the next country on my bucket list, but also make some money while I am there and give back in a way I enjoy and find stimulating.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, and I hope I am considered for the role. I look forward to further communication with you.

Sincerely,

Jenefas Okonma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your suitability as a native speaker with formal training, offered additional help through babysitting and educational excursions, and provided a clear personal motivation for wanting the role. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, showing a clear understanding of the task requirements. You have maintained a consistent and professional persona throughout the letter, which makes the communication effective and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You have used a range of cohesive devices such as 'In addition to', 'This translates to', and 'not only... but also' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between your suitability for the job and your additional contributions is smooth. The overall structure is coherent and easy to navigate.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context of a job application. Phrases like 'duration of a year', 'affords me the opportunity', and 'stimulating' show a level of lexical control that goes beyond basic communication. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to reach the highest bands. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your meaning with precision and clarity throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your grammar is strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use relative clauses and compound sentences effectively, such as 'I am a native Yoruba speaker, having learned the language growing up.' There are very few errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally accurate, and your control over verb tenses is consistent. The writing is fluent, and the majority of your sentences are error-free, which demonstrates a high level of grammatical competence.
