Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Ali,
I am writing this letter to apply for the job of an Urdu tutor for your children that you recently advertised in the local newspaper.
I would be perfect for this job as I was born and raised in Pakistan and have just moved recently to Australia. I am proficient both in Urdu and English so I will be better able to explain the subtle nuances of the language. Additionally, my previous experience in teaching makes me perfect for this role.
Apart from language, I can also familiarize your children about Pakistani culture, and traditions which they must have long forgotten.
I want this job as I am struggling to adjust in the new environment and connecting with another Pakistani family would be a great emotional support for me. Additionally, I could use some extra money for my tution fee.
I would be grateful if you could consider me for this job.
Yours sincerely,
Ifra

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your background and teaching experience, offer additional value by mentioning cultural education, and provide honest reasons for wanting the position. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a family. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your motivation and qualifications. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'what else you could do' section, perhaps by mentioning specific activities like helping with homework or organizing cultural events, to provide more depth to your proposal.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Apart from' to link your ideas. While the flow is clear, the transition between the personal motivation (needing support) and the financial motivation (tuition fees) could be smoother. Using a wider variety of linking words or phrases would help improve the overall cohesion and make the writing feel more sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'subtle nuances' and 'familiarize your children' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'tution fee' (which is a spelling error) and the phrasing 'familiarize your children about', which should be 'familiarize your children with'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure spelling accuracy, as these small errors prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher level of sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound, such as 'I am writing this letter to apply for the job...'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'have just moved recently' (which is redundant) and 'familiarize your children about', which slightly impact the precision of your writing. Punctuation is generally accurate. To achieve a higher band, focus on reducing redundant phrasing and ensuring that complex sentence structures are error-free, which will demonstrate a more consistent control over your grammar.
