Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in your advertisement that you posted few days ago in regards to to teach your children my language for minimum one year. Punjabi is my native language and also mother tung so i will be really suitable for this position as i am writing, speaking and listening this language since my birth.

I am also providing coaching at my place in the evening batch. And I am also flexible to visit at your place if you want to teach to your children. However, my apartment is also at the same street where you live. So your children can come by walk. currently, I am offering 20% discount to newcomers. You can grab that opportunity.

The reason, I want that job is I am planning to buy my own house in Australia for which I need more money. And recently I lost my full time job for which I am struggling with my finances.

I would really appreciate if you can consider me to teach your children a new language and get that opportunity. Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours Sincerely,

Lovejeet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: suitability, additional help, and reasons for wanting the job. However, the tone is somewhat inconsistent for a formal letter to a potential employer. While the points are covered, the development is a bit simplistic. For instance, the explanation of suitability focuses heavily on native language ability but lacks detail on teaching experience or pedagogical approach. The reasons for wanting the job are clear but could be framed more professionally. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the response would benefit from a more formal and persuasive tone to better suit the context of applying for a position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the specific details and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are occasionally abrupt, such as the jump between discussing the apartment location and the discount offer. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow could be improved by using a wider range of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly rather than relying on simple sentence structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are some noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'mother tung' instead of 'mother tongue' and 'to to teach' (repetition). The phrasing is often quite basic, such as 'grab that opportunity' or 'struggling with my finances', which sounds a bit informal for a job application. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more sophisticated collocations and ensure accurate spelling of key terms. The range is sufficient to convey the message, but it does not demonstrate a high level of lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'advertisement that you posted few days ago' (missing article), 'visit at your place' (incorrect preposition), and 'come by walk' (incorrect idiom). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and tense usage, such as 'I am writing, speaking and listening this language since my birth'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to articles, prepositions, and verb tenses is required.
