Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in the position advertised for a person to teach your children my native language for one year.

I believe I would be suitable for this job because I am expert in Gujrati language and have a good command in English. As a Physiotherapist, I have developed communication and interpersonal skills. So, I would be able to communicate effectively with you and your children. Moreover, I can explain things clearly and make language lessons interesting through games, stories, routine conversations, poems and useful everyday activities rather than only relying on notebooks. This would help your children to develop vocabulary and being confident in Gujarati language.

Apart from learning language, I would happy to help your family for some household responsibilities. Foer instance, I could assist you for preparing Indian food and take care of childe when necessary. Furthermore, I could help your children with their homework and also teach valuable lesson about Gujarati tradition and culture.

I am particularly interested in this position as I have to gain international exposure and improve my English language by living in an abroad. Moreover, I am always fascinated to learn Australian culture and lifestyle. I believe this would be beneficial for me and you both of us, as I could share my language with your children while gaining valuable experience of Australian lifestyle.

I would be grateful if you could consider my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Divya Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explained your suitability by highlighting your professional background as a physiotherapist and your teaching approach. You also provided relevant examples of additional help, such as cooking and childcare, and clearly articulated your motivations for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the advertisement. You have successfully fulfilled all requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Apart from', 'Furthermore', and 'For instance' to link your sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent. The flow of information is smooth, and the letter maintains a consistent tone throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'good command', 'interpersonal skills', and 'international exposure' show a solid grasp of English. There are a few minor errors, such as 'being confident' instead of 'becoming confident' and 'living in an abroad' (which should be 'living abroad'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to express your ideas clearly and with some precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'I would happy to help' (missing 'be') and 'take care of childe' (spelling error), the majority of your sentences are error-free. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally good. The errors present are non-systematic and do not cause any difficulty for the reader, which is consistent with a band 7 level of performance.
