Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Devgan,

I am writing in response to your advertisement for a language tutor to teach your two children for a year. I would like to apply for this position, as I believe I am well suited for this role.

To begin with, I have a strong command in my language in both written and spoken. Moreover, in back home, I worked as a primary school teacher, where I helped younger children in reading, writing and improve their grammar skills. I am confident that I can adapt different teaching style to suit different age groups to effectively deliver lessons.

In addition to teaching. I can assist your family in organizing extra-curricular activities, supervising the homework and can help your children in practice language in everyday situations.

I am particularly interested in this job because i really enjoying teaching younger children and contribute my knowledge and skills to improve their academic performance. Moreover, working with your family helps me gain cultural experience while offering teching services.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to discussing this opportunity further at your convenience.

Yours faithfully,

harmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your suitability by highlighting your teaching background, offered additional assistance such as organizing activities, and provided clear reasons for wanting the job, specifically mentioning cultural experience and a passion for teaching. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why'—for example, explaining why you are specifically interested in the Australian context or how your teaching philosophy aligns with their family values. Overall, the task is fully covered.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'In addition to' to connect your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor punctuation errors, such as the full stop after 'teaching' in the third paragraph, which should be a comma. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that punctuation does not break the flow of your sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'extra-curricular activities', 'academic performance', and 'command'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'in back home' (should be 'back home' or 'in my home country') and 'practice language' (should be 'practice the language'). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. Incorporating more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I really enjoying' (should be 'I really enjoy'), 'contribute my knowledge' (should be 'contribute with my knowledge' or 'use my knowledge'), and 'teching' (spelling error). Additionally, there are some issues with article usage and verb forms. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for minor spelling and tense errors will significantly improve your accuracy.
