Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to your advertisement for someone to teach your two children my language for a year. I believe I would be a suitable candidate because I am a native speaker and have a good understanding of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. I am also patient, friendly and enjoy working with children. I can make the lessons interesting by using stories, games and everyday conversations.

In addition to teaching the language, I could help your children with their homework and reading. I would also be happy to introduce them to my culture, including traditional food, festivals and customs. If required, I could occasionally help with simple household tasks and look after the children when you are busy.

I am particularly interested in this position because I would like to spend a year in Australia and gain valuable experience living with an Australian family. At the same time, I would enjoy sharing my language and culture with your children and helping them develop useful communication skills.

I would be grateful if you could consider my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Navya Rabari.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your status as a native speaker and your teaching approach. You also provide relevant additional services, such as homework assistance and cultural exchange, and clearly state your motivations for wanting the position. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the advertisement. You have successfully met all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which makes the structure easy to follow. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'In addition to', 'At the same time', and 'If required' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The opening and closing salutations are correct for a formal letter where the recipient's name is unknown. The flow of information is smooth and professional throughout the entire piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context of a job application. Phrases like 'suitable candidate', 'valuable experience', and 'develop useful communication skills' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it remains somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions related to teaching or cultural exchange. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely without any errors in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The writing is highly accurate with no noticeable grammatical errors. You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses ('If required, I could...') and participial phrases. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and the sentence construction is consistently error-free. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is excellent. Because the majority of your sentences are error-free and you show a good command of complex structures, this meets the criteria for a high band score.
