Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Patel,
I am writing to apply for the tutoring job posted by you last week on newspaper. I heard that you are looking for a fluent tutor to teach Gujarati language to your children for one year. I believe, I am the ideal candidate for this role and list down all the related points.
Firstly, I hail from a town called Surat in Gujarat. I completed my entire education in Gujarati language and also I completed my engineering in Surat. From the last 20 years, I spent my life talking and living with people who speaks Gujarati as their first language. Secondly, I came to Australia last year to pursue my PhD in chemical engineering and I also live in nearby neighbourhood. I can accommodate 20+ hours every week to teach and it is flexible based on your schedule.
In addition, during this summer time, I can help you and your family with majority of house hold chores such as cleaning, gardening and cooking. I love making Indian and Gujarati dishes for your family as a chef. I have registered driving license and could take your children to nearby gardens and picnic spots.
Furthermore, I believe my upbringing in Gujarat and my flexible work schedule makes me an ideal candidate for this job. I am actively looking for part-time roles and this role fits as an ideal job for me. I am attaching my transcripts and resume for your reference. Should you require more details, I am happy to assist you.
I look forward to hearing back and meeting you in person to discuss further.
Yours sincerely,
Neel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly explained your suitability by highlighting your background in Gujarat and your current academic status. You also provided relevant additional services, such as household chores and driving, and clearly stated your motivations for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. The response is well-developed, and all requirements of the task are met in a professional and helpful manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You have used transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the cohesive devices are slightly mechanical. However, the overall structure is logical and easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is consistent throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'hail from', 'pursue my PhD', and 'accommodate 20+ hours' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'posted by you last week on newspaper' (should be 'in the newspaper') and 'I have registered driving license' (should be 'I hold a valid driver's license'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'people who speaks' (should be 'speak'), 'I completed my entire education in Gujarati language' (missing 'the'), and 'this role fits as an ideal job' (slightly unnatural phrasing). However, these errors are non-systematic and do not cause confusion for the reader. Your control of punctuation and sentence structure is generally good, and you have successfully communicated your intentions with a reasonable degree of accuracy.
