Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in response to your advertisement for someone to teach your two children my native language for a year. I believe I would be a suitable candidate because I am a fluent speaker and have a good understanding of grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Moreover, I enjoy working with children and have experience helping younger students with their studies.
Apart from teaching the language, I could also help your children with their homework and organize educational activities to make learning more enjoyable. I would be happy to introduce them to my country's culture, traditions, stories and music. In addition, I could assist your family with simple household tasks and look after the children when necessary.
I am particularly interested in this position because I have always wanted to experience life in Australia and learn more about its culture and lifestyle. Living with your family would give me an excellent opportunity to improve my communication skills while sharing my own language and culture with your children. I also believe that this would be a rewarding experience for both your family and me.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Om

You also provide relevant additional services, such as homework assistance and cultural exchange, and articulate a clear, personal motivation for wanting the position in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and directly relevant to the task requirements, demonstrating a strong grasp of the communicative goal.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the structure easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover', 'Apart from', 'In addition', and 'Therefore', to link your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the opening and closing salutations are correct for the context. The flow of information is natural and consistent throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context of a job application. Phrases like 'suitable candidate', 'educational activities', and 'rewarding experience' show a solid command of language. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the tone well, it remains somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations to add nuance to your descriptions. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally without any errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of sentence structures used correctly. You successfully employ complex sentences, such as 'I believe I would be a suitable candidate because I am a fluent speaker...' and 'Living with your family would give me an excellent opportunity...'. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no noticeable errors that impede communication. The control over verb tenses and modal verbs is consistent, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
