IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear .................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Abc and XYZ,

I came to know about your requirement of Punjabi language tutor for your kids and writing this mail to apply for the position offered.

I am gold medalist of masters in Punjabi literature and grammar, year 2022, from Punjab university, Chandigarh.. Apart from that, I do have hands on experience of teaching students of different age groups in my professional journey and currently available in to teach in person in Melbourne.

Moreover, I am available for home tuition which will lift your responsibility to drop and pick them from class. As informed above, working with different age groups make me suitable for other family members who are interested in learning in reading, writing and speaking in Punjabi.

I have recently moved here in country from Punjab and and currently appointed as part time Punjabi teacher in SSS school. I am looking for opportunities to get some extra work hours doing something meaningful for myself and society along with making little extra income that would help me to settle in new location.

Yours faithfully.

Tirlok

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain your suitability by mentioning your academic background and teaching experience, offer additional help such as home tuition, and provide clear reasons for wanting the position. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a family. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your experience and the specific needs of the children is more explicitly developed, rather than just listing your qualifications. The response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Apart from that', 'Moreover', and 'As informed above' to link your sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between your professional background and your personal motivation for the job is smoother. Paragraphing is used correctly, and the overall structure is sound.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'gold medalist', 'professional journey', and 'meaningful'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'I came to know about your requirement' (better: 'I am writing in response to your advertisement') and 'moved here in country' (better: 'moved to this country'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your use of topic-specific collocations would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I do have hands on experience' (unnecessary 'do'), 'currently available in to teach' (incorrect preposition usage), and 'and and' (repetition error). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though the closing 'Yours faithfully.' should not have a period after the word. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and prepositional phrases will improve your accuracy.
