Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or madam,

I hope you are doing well. I recently saw your advertisement needing someone to teach your children a new language. I am very much interested in this because I know fluent German.

I think I would be suitable because I have experience in teaching the language to my younger cousins. I would be able to train them to speak and write effortlessly.

If you require, I would also be able to take care of your children if you are away. I can also prepare some basic meals for them.

I really want this job because I was not able to secure any part-time jobs, which lead to difficulties for my daily expenditures. Moreover I only have to attend my college 3 days a week so I have lot of leisure time.

I would greatly appreciate it if you consider my request. Thank you for your understanding.

Yours sincerely,

Ram

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points in the prompt: suitability, additional help, and reasons for applying. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir or Madam' is slightly generic given the prompt specifies writing to a 'couple'. The ideas are relevant, though the explanation regarding the motivation for the job—focusing on financial difficulties—is a bit blunt for a professional application. To improve, you could frame your interest more around your passion for teaching and cultural exchange, which would be more persuasive to a family looking for a tutor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'If you require' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. The overall progression is clear, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which is appropriate for this task type.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'effortlessly' and 'greatly appreciate' are used correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly in the final paragraph where you use 'jobs' twice in close proximity. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items related to teaching or childcare. For example, instead of 'take care of', you could use 'supervise' or 'provide childcare'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. There are a few minor errors, such as 'which lead to' (should be 'which leads to') and 'I only have to attend my college' (the 'my' is unnecessary). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the natural use of articles. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the letter is easy to read.
