Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter regarding a job commercial posted on yesterday's news paper "The Sydney Morning Herald" for a Punjabi language tutor position.

In my opinion, I would be a perfect candidate for this opportunity as I my roots are in Punjab and it is my mother tongue. Additionally, I have been teaching diverse languages from couple of years to the adolescents and gain exceptional experience. I have completed a diploma in child care too that not only helps me in teaching children but also taking care of them.

I can inculcate wholesome customs to the children as time management, obeying elders and team work. This will leads to overall growth of the children.

I want to get this job as I have recently moved to Australia and looking for a full time job in my domain. So, I can manage my expenses. I believe this is a great opportunity for me keep work-life balance and earning while enjoying with the children.

I would like to thank you for considering my application and I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss how my experience and skills could contribute to linguistic journey of your children.

I am looking forward to hearing back from you.

your sincerely,

Rajpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You explained your suitability by highlighting your background and childcare qualifications, suggested additional contributions such as teaching customs, and provided clear reasons for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how your specific teaching methods would benefit the children's language acquisition. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'In my opinion', and 'So', which help connect your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create smoother transitions between sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard structure, which contributes to the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'adolescents', 'inculcate', and 'linguistic journey'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'job commercial' instead of 'job advertisement' and 'news paper' (which should be one word). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'gain exceptional experience' (should be 'have gained'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I my roots' (missing verb), 'from couple of years' (should be 'for a couple of years'), and 'This will leads' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'your sincerely' should be 'Yours sincerely'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy would help you achieve a higher band score.
