Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear MR and MRS Smith,

I am writing you regarding the advertisement you have put in newspaper that you are looking for a Punjabi Professional to teach your children for a year.

As I have previous teaching so I know how to handle the kids so that they can learn quickly and effectively. I have some different methods to teach through those I make sure the bonding between parents and child become stronger and both of them should be happy. It would be fun with the learning.

Other than teaching them Punjabi, I could help you to pick and drop the your children from school and vice versa. I can also baby sit them if you need to relax and spend some time together.

I really need this job as I am only earning person in my family and I was laid off by my company due to their financial crisis. To fulfill the needs of the family, I am ready to do this job.

Waiting for your valuable response.

Yours sincerely

Shanu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain your suitability by mentioning your teaching experience, offer additional help such as childcare and transport, and provide a clear reason for wanting the job. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Dear MR and MRS Smith' is slightly unusual; 'Dear Mr and Mrs Smith' would be more standard. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from your qualifications to your additional services and finally your motivation. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Other than' and 'As I have', to link your thoughts. However, the flow could be improved with more varied transition words to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the structure is easy to follow and supports the reader's understanding.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'financial crisis' and 'effectively'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'I am only earning person' instead of 'the only earning member' and 'pick and drop the your children'. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that articles and pronouns are used correctly in professional contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing you regarding' (should be 'writing to you'), 'I have previous teaching' (should be 'teaching experience'), and 'bonding between parents and child become' (should be 'becomes'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with capitalization and missing articles. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your control over basic sentence construction will help improve your score.
