Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter with regard to teaching English language for your kids.

I am Ryan, I basically born and raise in Canada, So teaching English would be easy for me, moreover I also worked as a language assistant in my university where I learnt how to prepare portions and schedule for students to work.

Also, I am a fine arts student, I know to work on different painting medium like acrylic, oil and watercolor, If your kids have time after the language class, I am happy to teach topics related to arts and I would also explain how to paint portraits in both traditional and contemporary style.

As I said in the beginning, I am student and I am in my final semester, My goal is to become a teacher, but I wanted to gain experience from outside, so if I get this job, I could improve my teaching skills while improving the students communication skill.

Looking forward for your response. Thank you

Yours Respectfully

Ryan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your suitability, offering additional help, and stating your reasons for wanting the job. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For example, while you mention being a fine arts student, you could have elaborated more on how this specifically benefits the children's development beyond just listing mediums. The letter covers the requirements well enough to be clear, but further expansion on your motivations and the specific benefits you bring would elevate the response to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'moreover', 'also', and 'as I said in the beginning' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother, particularly in the final paragraph where the connection between your studies and the job could be more tightly integrated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'language assistant', 'contemporary style', and 'final semester'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'basically born and raise' (should be 'born and raised') and 'prepare portions' (which is unclear in this context). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. You rely on fairly common phrasing; incorporating more specific collocations related to teaching or childcare would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I basically born and raise' (tense/passive voice error), 'I know to work on' (should be 'I know how to work with'), and 'improving the students communication skill' (missing apostrophe). Additionally, punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with comma splices. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb tenses will significantly improve your accuracy.
