Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir or madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing in a response to your advertisement published this weekend.

I strongly believe that I qualify for the Punjabi Language teacher you are seeking for your children. The first reason why I could be the best fit for this position is, I have born and brought up in Punjab and it's my mother tongue as well. Besides, I have studied fundamentals of Punjabi language throughout my academics and graduation been working in a college as a Punjabi Literature teacher for last 3 years. The best thing is that I am migrating to Australia next months for my further studies and will be moving to your city.

I will be available to work for 3 months until my semester starts in September. I will be able to babysit your children and looking after them while you are working. Moreover, I have some culinary skills as well, thus I can also serve as a cook for your family.

I desperately need a job to start my life in Australia and also need some money for paying off my bills and school fees. I would appreciate if you could give me a chance to earn some money.

I will look forward to hearing back from you. If you would like to interview me in Australia, I will be ready start work right away.

Your faithfully,

Aman.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your background as a native Punjabi speaker and your teaching experience. You also offer additional services, such as babysitting and cooking, and provide a clear motivation for wanting the job. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Dear sir or madam' is slightly generic given the prompt mentions a 'couple'. Overall, the response is well-developed and covers all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'The first reason', 'Besides', 'Moreover', and 'thus' to link your sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are less mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use relevant terms like 'qualify', 'fundamentals', 'academics', and 'culinary skills'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I have born and brought up' (should be 'I was born and brought up') and 'migrating to Australia next months' (should be 'next month'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over verb forms and pluralization to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I have born' (passive voice error), 'graduation been working' (missing auxiliary verb), and 'I will be ready start work' (missing 'to'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of auxiliary verbs in complex sentences.
