Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing in response to your advertisement for someone to teach your two children my native language for a year. I believe I would be well suited to this position because I am a retired teacher and have considerable experience working with children.
I was born and brought up in Quebec and am a native French speaker. During my teaching career, I taught students from different age groups, so I am familiar with explaining difficult concepts in a simple and engaging way. I am also patient and would be happy to adapt my lessons according to your children's abilities.
Apart from teaching French, I could help the children with their homework and introduce them to French culture, food and traditions. I would also be happy to assist your family with communication whenever necessary.
I am particularly interested in this opportunity because I would like to share my language and culture with your children while gaining experience working with an Australian family. I believe this would be both personally and professionally rewarding.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Tim

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability as a retired teacher, offer additional help with homework and cultural exchange, and provide logical reasons for wanting the job, such as personal and professional growth. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the advertisement. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task in a professional and engaging manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Apart from', 'During my teaching career', and 'I am also', which help to link your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The transition between your professional background and your personal motivation for the role is handled effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context of a formal application. Phrases like 'well suited to this position', 'engaging way', and 'personally and professionally rewarding' show a good command of language. The vocabulary is precise and used accurately throughout the letter. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions related to teaching or cultural exchange could elevate the response further, but the current level is already very strong for this task type.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of complex sentence structures used correctly. You successfully employ subordinate clauses, such as 'I am writing in response to...' and '...because I am a retired teacher...', which demonstrate good control. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the overall control of tense and agreement is excellent, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
