Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sarah,

I am writing this letter to respond to your advertisement for a French teacher for your children. I believe that I will be suitable for this job because I was a French teacher for 10 years. I am a native French speaker. Along with this, I have a bachelor's degree in the language. I offer a private tuition based on the family availability. I am friendly, and polite.

In addition to teaching, I can help in household chores such as laundry, light housekeeping, and preparing a simple meal for children. Moreover, I could assist them with their homework as well.

I would like to have this job because I recently moved to Australia. Despite that I am experi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: suitability, additional help, and reasons for wanting the job. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. The final paragraph is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which prevents a full exploration of the reasons for wanting the job. To improve, you must ensure you meet the word count requirement by expanding on your points—for example, by providing specific examples of your teaching methods or elaborating on why you are interested in this specific family or location.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Along with this', 'In addition to', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, because the response is incomplete, the overall progression is interrupted. The flow is generally easy to follow, but the lack of a proper closing and the abrupt ending at the end of the text detract from the overall coherence of the letter. To reach a higher band, ensure your paragraphs are fully developed and that the letter has a natural, complete conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, covering the necessary topics such as 'household chores', 'private tuition', and 'native speaker'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There is little attempt to use less common or more sophisticated vocabulary. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and varied descriptive language. For instance, instead of 'simple meal', you could use 'nutritious meals', and instead of 'I am friendly', you could use 'I possess an approachable and patient demeanor'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, though there are minor issues, such as 'I offer a private tuition' (should be 'private tuition' or 'a private tutoring service') and 'Despite that I am' (should be 'Despite the fact that I am'). While your grammar is generally clear and does not impede communication, the range of structures is limited. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of complex sentence forms and ensure consistent control over articles and prepositions.
