Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you about my interest in teaching your children, my language for a year.

I am a native speaker and it would be beneficial for your children do learn rapidly. Also. I am a graduate in English literature and a professional lecturer with five years of experience. Other than my qualification, I could be a good friend, mentor, and a well wisher for your children. I am able to provide both online and in-person classes according to your convenience.

Moreover, I could give tuition for other subjects like science and history. So you do not have to worry about finding an additional tutor for them. And my fee is comparatively low and cheap.

The reason why I want this job is because I need a break from my career life. I am planning to go for higher studies and as a hobby I am willing to teach students.

I hope you will give this job to me. Kindly reply to this letter.

Yours sincerely,

Emmanuel Paulose

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your suitability, offering additional help, and stating your reasons for wanting the job. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir/Madam' is slightly generic given the prompt specifies writing to a 'couple'. You have provided relevant details, such as your professional background and your willingness to assist with other subjects. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is more consistent; for instance, the explanation of your motivation could be expanded to show more enthusiasm for the cultural exchange aspect of the role.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You have used some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'Also', to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by short, choppy sentences, such as 'Also. I am a graduate...'. Using more varied transition words and ensuring that sentences are connected more fluidly would improve the overall coherence. The paragraphing is clear and appropriate for a formal letter, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use professional terms like 'native speaker', 'professional lecturer', and 'qualification'. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'my fee is comparatively low and cheap' is redundant, as 'low' and 'cheap' convey the same meaning. Additionally, 'career life' is slightly unnatural; 'professional career' would be more standard. Expanding your range to include more precise adjectives and avoiding repetitive phrasing would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical errors, such as 'your children do learn' (should be 'to learn') and the punctuation error 'Also. I am a...'. There is also a minor error in 'a well wisher', which should be hyphenated as 'well-wisher'. You have good control over basic structures, but to move into the higher bands, you should aim for more error-free complex sentences and ensure that your punctuation is consistently accurate throughout the text.
