Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Parmar,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits.

I am writing to express my keen interest in the tutor position that I saw advertised on the website. With 4 years of experience as a tutor, I am confident that my skills and qualifications align well with the requirements of this role.

In my previous role at previous company, I consistently achieved accomplishments relevant to this position. Moreover, I had valuable experience with the English language and I would be best for that position. Furthermore, I have completed a certification in the English language.

I am a highly motivated and results-oriented individual with a strong work ethic. I agree to contribute my expertise to your children for a year. I would be grateful if you could accept my application for this position as the income would be helpful to my family. I am recently looking for a job because I need money to survive.

Thank you for your understanding and considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you soon regarding my application.

Yours faithfully,

Lynn

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points, though the development of ideas is somewhat limited. You explain your suitability through your tutoring experience and certification, and you mention your motivation for the job. However, the second bullet point—what else you could do for the family—is not addressed. You mention you are 'results-oriented' and 'agree to contribute expertise,' but you fail to offer specific additional help, such as household chores, cooking, or childcare duties, which would be expected in this context. The tone is generally appropriate, though the mention of needing money to 'survive' is slightly unprofessional for a formal job application.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In my previous role' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is sufficient, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. To improve, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed point rather than jumping between topics, and try to vary your linking words to make the flow more natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'keen interest,' 'results-oriented,' and 'work ethic.' However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'previous company' (which is vague) and 'I would be best for that position' (which sounds unnatural). The phrase 'need money to survive' is also stylistically poor for a professional letter. Expanding your vocabulary to include more specific professional collocations would help you reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'I am recently looking for a job' should be 'I have recently been looking for a job' or 'I am currently looking for a job.' Additionally, 'I agree to contribute my expertise' is slightly awkward; 'I am eager to contribute' would be more natural. Punctuation is generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication, but the control over verb tenses and word order needs more consistency.
