Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Parmar,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my keen interest in the position of language tutor that I recently saw advertised online. I believe I would be well suited to this role, as I have four years of experience tutoring children and have completed a certification in English language teaching.

In my previous tutoring position, I worked with children of different ages and abilities and developed effective ways of making lessons engaging and enjoyable. I am patient, responsible and enthusiastic, and I would be able to adapt my teaching methods according to your children's individual needs.

In addition to teaching your children my language, I would be happy to assist the family in other ways. For example, I could help the children with their homework, accompany them to local activities and prepare simple meals when necessary. I would also be pleased to introduce them to my culture and help them develop an interest in different languages.

I am particularly interested in this position because I would love the opportunity to experience Australian culture while sharing my own language and traditions with your family. Moreover, the position would provide me with valuable international experience and financial stability.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Lynn

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your suitability by highlighting your four years of experience and certification. You also provide a comprehensive list of additional services, such as homework assistance and meal preparation, and articulate clear, personal reasons for wanting the job, specifically mentioning the desire for cultural exchange and professional growth. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, meeting all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use a variety of cohesive devices, such as 'In addition to', 'For example', and 'Moreover', to link your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the opening and closing salutations are correct for a formal letter. The flow of information is natural and professional throughout the entire piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context of a job application. Phrases like 'keen interest', 'adapt my teaching methods', and 'financial stability' show a strong command of language. The word choices are precise and natural, contributing to a professional tone. There are no spelling errors, and the vocabulary is used accurately to convey your message. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions could elevate this further, but the current level is very strong for this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of complex sentence structures used correctly. You successfully employ conditional structures ('I would be able to'), relative clauses, and compound-complex sentences without error. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no noticeable grammatical slips. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and aspect is consistent. The writing is polished and demonstrates a high level of grammatical competence, making the text very easy to read and understand.
