Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Baljinder,
I saw an advertisement on Facebook recently, in which you mentioned that you are looking for a tutor for your children who can teach them French. I believe that I would be well suited for this position.
French is my mother tongue. I've been fluent in French since childhood. Moreover, for the last few months, I have been teaching French to children in my neighbourhood. But recently I moved to your city, and I've been looking for a job.
Apart from teaching French, I do babysitting as well. If you hire me, I can be beneficial to your children academically and practically. Apart from this I can help you with preparing small meals and taking children to school. I'm particularly interested in this job as I love to work with children and get a chance to work with an Australian family.
I'm looking for your prompt reply.
Your faithfully,
Harmeet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your suitability by highlighting your native language skills and teaching experience, offered additional help such as babysitting and meal preparation, and provided clear reasons for wanting the job. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your qualifications and motivations. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'reasons for wanting the job' by connecting your personal goals more deeply to the cultural experience of living with an Australian family.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover,' 'Apart from,' and 'If you hire me,' which help connect your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format, and the overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'well suited for this position,' 'mother tongue,' and 'academically and practically' are used effectively. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is somewhat standard. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'I do babysitting,' you could use 'I have extensive experience in childcare.' Your spelling is accurate throughout the letter, and your word choice does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your grammar is generally reliable. There is a minor error in the closing: 'Your faithfully' should be 'Yours faithfully.' Additionally, the sentence 'But recently I moved to your city' is slightly informal for a formal letter; 'However, I have recently relocated to your city' would be more appropriate. Despite these minor slips, your control over grammar is good, and the meaning is always clear. You demonstrate a solid grasp of basic and intermediate grammatical structures.
